Emblem of Sanary
For the Saint-Nazairiens, with the growth of their city, the desire to be able to manage themselves increases. Notables, pushed by captains merchants who frequent their harbor, make pressure and try to have supports, high-placed, such those of the Duke of Beaufort, of the Intendant Arnould, of the Marquis of Centurioni, of Nicet. Pierre Puget's letterIt will even be Pierre Puget that will draw the future harbor in 1672. All it will provide matter to build an important file that will shake the King Louis XIV himself. Only one obstacle of importance, the minister Colbert. He undertakes big works to Toulon for the harbor and for the arsenal and don't wish a competitive harbor, so small is it. After his death, intervening in 1683, a last tentative will convince the King Louis XIV of the ambition exactness of Saint-Nazaire.
In 1688, an edict signed in his Council, the King being present, will dedicate the separation of Ollioules and Saint-Nazaire. It is July 10. After his passage before the Parliament of Provence sitting at Aix, the edict will arrive to Saint-Nazaire July 20.
This news will be welcomed with all the joy that one guesses. This victory dedicates the efforts of all. There are three hundred years of it...
Henceforth, the community takes her administration in charge. The edict of separation assigned her the third of the Ollioules territory and two mills to wheat; besides, various pension incomes. The first preoccupation of the new community will be a consul's election (mayor) and of his advice.
The first elected will be Barnabé Infernet. It is necessary to first work to the deepening of the harbor, because one of liabilities imposed by the King for the separation is the one of the possible access of the harbor to thirteen royal galleys. This work must be paid for a third by the borough, a third by the parliament of Aix, a third by the King. One will wait during more than thirty years this last payment. This advance of fund will burden for a long time the local finances. However, the remove of mud in the harbor will give access to more important ship and will encourage the maritime trade. Many captains, many merchants ships will give a big activity in the harbor.

The new community will arrive thus, in spite of some difficulties, to manage her future. The population increases, as well as the number of houses. Saint-Nazaire is now a borough that have 253 houses and 37 bastideses on the soil, either thereabouts 1600 inhabitants.
Alas, in 1707, the war is to our doors. The Duke of Savoie besieges Toulon and a hostile squadron of twenty-two ships comes to wet in roadstead of Saint-Nazaire with the intention to disembark there of troops to take Toulon to reverse. After an exchange of cannonballs that will last three days and half, the enemy is forced to retire. It is true that in addition of the local militia coast-guard and cannons of the tower, Toulon sent dragons who took position all along the coastline. However, the sea, to the large, remain little sure and it gene the maritime traffic and the fishery.
Two years later, in 1709, it will be the biggest cold weathers that the Provence knew. Again, the sea is forbidden and, besides, agriculture suffered awfully. It is necessary to buy grains to the outside. Olive trees, the grapevine, sources of wealth, are frozen. It will need several years to put back to normal.
Paint of the old harbor of Sanary In summary, difficult years for a young community without big means. A curse, even more terrifying, hits it in 1720-1721, the pestilence, that ravages the Provence of Marseille to Toulon and Ollioules, Saint-Nazaire will be reached in 1721 and only the sanitary measures, holds in time and severely controlled, will permit to the population to survive. Losses will only be about fifty people.
Life will take her rights.
In 1746, new invasion of the Provence by the austro-sardes. Saint-Nazaire won't be touched because this invasion won't be able to reach Toulon. In 1788, a squadron, under orders of Admiral Estaing, hence of Toulon, will participate to the war of independence of states of America. Twenty-seven Saint-Nazairiens will serve on board of different ships of this fleet.
